Components Original Design Iteration
The Acetabular Cup Just a hollow hemisphere We added a ring in the upper section of the acetabular cup to limit mobility and prevent joint dislocation.
Preliminary Design of the Hip Implant (Femoral Stem) For our first design of the femoral stem, we added a piston at the bottom to absorb the shock when the patient is doing intensive physical activities. However, realizing that the bottom of the stem is not often in contact with the bone and there is little to no shock exerted by the bottom stem for the bone, we changed our design to move the piston to the top of the stem connected to the femoral neck.
Nevertheless, we removed this modification because it is producing too much wear debris.
Preliminary Design of the Hip Implant (Femoral Head) Originally, we reintroduced the synovial fluid between the cups and the ball ballast. Keeping the “Kugel Hip” design, we replaced the synovial fluid with microgel brushes due to the risks that the fluid may leak our from the cups.
Preliminary Design of Surgical Fixation (Acetabular Cup) The original design only included two screws where the original ones were. The new design has four screws for increased stability in different places. After research in the hip implant revision surgery, we determined that screws cannot be placed in original positions.
Revisions for Computing Technical Deliverables N/A For our final submissions, we have added some details to the main functions to make them more creative, for example, I implemented a “try” statement to count for the case when the user input is a string value. We also implemented the “time” method to delay the close of the program for 3 seconds.
